Description

  • a flat-bottomed conical flask whose shape allows the contents to be swirled without danger of spilling

An Erlenmeyer flask, also known as a conical flask or a titration flask, is a type of laboratory flask which features a flat bottom, a conical body, and a cylindrical neck.

  • Flasks can be used for making solutions or for holding, containing, collecting, or sometimes volumetrically measuring chemicals, samples, solutions, etc. for chemical reactions or other processes such as mixing, heating, cooling, dissolving, precipitation, boiling (as in distillation), or analysis.
  • The Erlenmeyer flask offers a slight advantage in accuracy due to its tapered sides. The size of the beaker or flask should be chosen to allow for more liquid to be added during the titration process. This makes it simpler than subtracting once the titration is complete. There is a valve at the bottom of the burette.
  • The Erlenmeyer flask has diverse uses such as holding and measuring chemical liquid samples, but can also be used to mix, heat and boil chemicals.
  • Erlenmeyer flasks are recognizable from their basic characteristics: flat bottom, conical body, and long, cylindrical neck
  • Erlenmeyer flasks have a narrow neck over a conical base, while beakers are basically large open-mouthed glass jars with a lip and spout for pouring.
