Umbilical scissors are especially designed to cut the umbilical cord after delivery. These scissors are typically handheld, manual instruments with two thin, very wide blades with large, rounded, blunt tips that slide past each other (i.e., shearing action). The blades are attached to handles with the proximal end conformed as a ring to facilitate holding and operating with the fingers; both parts are joined by a swivel pin in the center.
They are made from stainless steel and feature distinctive wide, curved blades in order to effectively cut through umbilical cords. These scissors are typically used without clamping the umbilical cord, as the curvature of the blades holds the cord firmly in place.
The umbilical cord scissors are not only a necessary item to stock in the delivery rooms of the maternity wards at hospitals, but are great to have at veterinary clinics and farms to use for animal births too.
