The 10% solution is used most often to disinfect skin, but it also comes in diluted concentrations as low as 0.3%. Common side effects seen with both povidone-iodine eye drops and skin formulations include local swelling, irritation, itching, and rash. With overuse, povidone-iodine can have corrosive effects.
POVIDONE IODINE (poe-vee-don ahy-uh-din) is used on the skin to decrease risk of infection. This medicine is also used as a surgical hand scrub and to wash the skin and surface of the eye before surgery to help prevent infections. This medicine is for external use only.
- This combination product is used to treat minor wounds (e.g., cuts, scrapes, burns) and to help prevent or treat mild skin infections. Minor skin infections and wounds usually heal without treatment, but some minor skin wounds may heal faster when an antibiotic is applied to the affected area.
