Description

Laryngoscope blades are used as the primary tool for examination of the interior of the larynx and for placement of an endotracheal tube.

Laryngoscopes are designed for visualization of the vocal cords and for placement of the ETT into the trachea under direct vision. The two main types are the curved Macintosh blade and the straight blade Miller

  • The Miller laryngoscope is a straight blade designed to obtain a view of the vocal cords by directly lifting the epiglottis. It has useful application in ‘floppy’ airways making it popular within paediatric anaesthesia.
  • The Macintosh laryngoscope has a curved blade which allows exposure of the larynx by positioning the tip in the vallecula, anterior to the epiglottis, lifting it out of view. This laryngoscope is designed to lessen the difficulty of exposing the larynx to pass an endotracheal tube.
