Description

Plaster of paris, used for making dental casts and dies.

Plaster of Paris is used for pouring casts, making matrices for prosthodontic restorations, for attaching casts to articulators, and general use in the dental laboratory where strength is not important.

Plaster of Paris is an extremely porous material when dried, and as such, will absorb any new water that touches its surface. In order to waterproof plaster of Paris for outdoor use or for temporary exposure to water that it is a waterproof material you must fill in as many surface pores as possible.

Why it is called plaster of Paris?

  • Plaster of Paris is obtained by heating gypsum or calcium sulphate dihydrate to about 140-180 degree Celsius. When heated to such a temperature, gypsum forms Plaster of Paris.
