Bone Cement

Description

Bone cement, which is actually ‘polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), is a compound used to help adhere prosthetics to bone inside the body. Knee, hip and shoulder replacements often make use of bone cement. Bone cement is comprised of two parts: a powder and a liquid that begins to harden after it is mixed.

Bone cements have been used very successfully to anchor artificial joints for more than half a century. Artificial joints are anchored with bone cement. The bone cement fills the free space between the prosthesis and the bone and plays the important role of an elastic zone.
