A Penrose drain is a soft, flexible rubber tube used as a surgical drain, to prevent the buildup of fluid in a surgical site. It belongs to the “passive” type of drain, the other broad type being “active”.
- Made of latex.
- It lets blood and other fluids move out of the area of your surgery.
- This keeps fluid from collecting under your incision (surgical cut) and causing infection.
- Use in superficial wounds where there is pre-existing or anticipated fluid production and should have a single ventral exit point.
- Easy to place
- Inexpensive
