A Penrose drain is a soft, flexible rubber tube used as a surgical drain, to prevent the buildup of fluid in a surgical site. It belongs to the “passive” type of drain, the other broad type being “active”.

It lets blood and other fluids move out of the area of your surgery.
This keeps fluid from collecting under your incision (surgical cut) and causing infection.
Use in superficial wounds where there is pre-existing or anticipated fluid production and should have a single ventral exit point.
